Physical Description		Xylen has olive skin and a fair complexion. He has ear length hair, and he tries to make himself look cool and trendy by styling it with hair texture powder. Xylen is the last of the Scalosian race. After the USS Enterprise found a way to restore normal time perception, preventing the Scalosian race from moving at the speed of a blink of an eye, the Federation offered to help restore the race's fertility, relocating the remaining population. Years of research lead to a science breakthrough. The Scalosian were able to repopulate, but for 3 years their sterility returned, and all other science discoveries have failed. The Federation has accepted their race is doomed.

Personal History		Xylen came into existence during a delicate miracle in the early days of the Scalosian people being conceived again after the Federation’s interference made it possible for them to conceive children for three brief years. This time, he spent his early life filled with a sense of awe and dread because the elders whispered with reverence about the days when they could move faster than the speed of light, whereas Federation researchers watched, studied, and attempted to guarantee that the gift of life remained alive. Growing up, Xylen saw a race of people who lived their lives with a mixture of thankfulness and terror because they knew their species had almost become extinct before. The recurrence of sterility in his people affected him greatly because he was part of the final generation born into their race, and they carried the burden of knowing their race would survive through him alone. The teenage years of Xylen saw a combination of both normalcy and extinction in a sense. While the Federation made every attempt to provide these teenagers with an education and social opportunities, even going so far as to build something of a high school for them, the fact remained that they were the last Scalosians alive. It was natural that in such times, strong bonds would form between people, as if knowing that there is little time left to lose. It was at this stage in his life that Xylen met Lira, his high school sweetheart who seemed to stand up against the inevitable with her own life. Together, they enjoyed snippets of a normal existence, learning together, dreaming of things to come and hoping that perhaps somewhere down the line, their race would carry on. It was an existence with bittersweet moments, however, because while they loved each other dearly, Xylen knew that they could not leave behind anything worth remembering to a coming generation. Joining Starfleet was, more accurately, a way of defying the inevitability of extinction rather than a matter of professional preference for Xylen. Having spent many years in the company of doctors and scientists, constantly asking unanswerable questions, Xylen learned from the best and adopted all of their practices, discipline, and hope. Joining Starfleet Academy and entering the medical program became an attempt on his part to explore the essence of life itself and eventually restore the life that once existed within his people. From day one, his tutors knew there was something unique about him; not only was he a brilliant medical student, but he was also incredibly driven. Whereas his classmates studied in order to be able to treat their patients, Xylen felt like he was racing against time. Many a late night he spent in the labs and medical simulators learning the intricacies of xenobiology. Underneath the discipline and uniform was hidden a promise to himself and to Lira that the story of the Scalosians would continue. When Xylen was well into his medical training with Starfleet, the Scalosian population had already fallen into single digits. The illness Lira suffered started out rather discreet, with fatigue and some instability on the cellular level that could not be diagnosed by any means of modern Federation medicine. Xylen dedicated all of his energy to her, surpassing the limits imposed on him as a cadet in his attempts to research her condition in any database available to him via Starfleet Academy, yet nothing could outrun what was happening inside Lira. In the days before she passed, time appeared to be especially cruel, a species whose ancestors knew no time watching its merciless passing away. Lira met death with serenity, telling Xylen not to give up after her departure, but use it as fuel for his further actions. The death of his lover and best friend came at a high cost It was a time when his entire race was headed towards extinction. Only a few of the Scalosians survived, and thus it was not just her memories that Xylen had to bear, but also the heavy burden of being among the last survivors of her extinct race. Xylen’s time as an Ensign at Starfleet Medical was characterized by an intense level of concentration and a very personal goal. He decided to focus on reproductive endocrinology and infertility, entering a realm that was regarded by many as limited. But for him, it was everything. Throughout his internship, he delved into comparative xenobiology, researching the wide range of reproductive systems present in different species throughout the Federation, looking for clues to unravel the mystery surrounding the Scalosians. It didn’t take long for those in command to notice the precision and dedication with which Xylen worked on his cases, whether they involved humans, Vulcans, or any other race. As he advanced through his residency, Xylen earned renown not only for his competence as a physician but for his boldness in tackling those cases most fraught with uncertainty. He spent countless hours alone in the lab, tracing the flow of hormones, conducting experiments in cellular regrowth, and combing through ancient Federation studies that had long since been shelved by his peers. Although he remained a gentle presence among his patients, there burned within him an insistent urgency, forged from grief over Lira, his people, and the realization that time was rapidly running out. Whereas other doctors regarded infertility as a biological obstacle, Xylen approached it as a struggle against oblivion. Each child he delivered meant more to him than just another healthy birth; it was a victory over extinction. It is perhaps fortunate that Xylen was able to take a different path with the assignment of being the Medical Officer aboard the USS Intrepid. On board the Intrepid, away from the more predictable setting of Starfleet Medical, his role became even more immediate and random, dealing with anything from minor injuries to major medical problems across species, having to apply his knowledge of reproduction to physiology that was entirely foreign to him. The next assignment for Xylen onboard the USS Cher became the key turning point in his professional and personal development. Gone were the times when he was a new officer who had to earn recognition; he was now entrusted with the responsibility of being both the Deptuy Chief Medical Officer. The Cher was a medium-sized research ship that worked on the borders of Federation territory and therefore had to combine its mission of peaceful exploration with handling crisis situations and defending itself from potential dangers. In his role as the ACMO, he continued to cultivate his image of meticulousness and compassion, leading the medical staff in navigating the treacherous waters of dealing with alien species and the dangerous diseases that threatened their survival. During his quieter moments, he furthered his research into reproduction biology, analyzing the data collected on the Cher and adding it to his quest for finding a cure.
