1,003 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: 84 Years Young
Location: Briefing Room - Deck 1
Timeline: Mission Day 7, a few hours after 'The First Crew In 64 Years'

It had been a few hours since the senior staff had come aboard: Violet figured that was plenty of time for everyone to get an idea of what was going on with their departments. In fact, it was enough time for a last minute assignment for Science to turn up and report in.

When the chronometer in the ready room indicated that it was nearly time to hold the scheduled senior staff briefing, Violet made her way over to the briefing room. It was the first time that she had seen this space, and on first walking in, the briefing room seemed to be a standard arrangement. However, as Violet rounded the table to get a view of the space from the windows, she wasn't prepared for what awaited her on the forward bulkhead:

What was normally in this display case varied depending on the ship: If it was a ship with an important lineage, the display would serve as a showcase of previous vessels to bear the name. If not, the display would be of a commissioned art piece relating to the vessel's namesake. However, for The Sullivans- the display was much more somber: For housed inside it was a charred piece of wreckage bearing the registry number NX-168. The registry of the Yorktown class battleship that last wore the name. And inscribed above the piece were the words "We Remember." With the wreckage bearing the NX-168 registry, the entire display was intended to read as "We Remember NX-168."

The display was intended to take one's breath away. To make one stop and reflect, and it certainly had that effect on Violet. She had heard that Commander Sullivan had selected a piece of the ship's predecessor to put on permanent display on board, but she hadn't expected it to be in the briefing room, where the entire senior staff would see it for every briefing. Though, as she thought about it, the location decision made sense.

It was difficult to settle a child, AND get to work, after arriving literal hours before her first official shift. The shuttle trip out had been longer than she'd anticipated, and she'd realized too late she should've left her son with his father and send for him later on in the week. However, her ex-husband was currently in a war zone, battling it out with whomever near the far ends of the AQ. Finally, the boy was settled in, and someone in her department was keeping an eye on him while she went to the senior staff meeting. Tomorrow, she'd carve out some time to find someone suitable for babysitting and tutoring, but that was a tomorrow-Keeli problem. She breezed into the meeting room, clutching a cup of coffee and her PADD. "Good afternoon," she said. "Lt. Commander Dr. Keeli Reex," she said. "I just got my assignment as the Chief Science Officer. My apologies for not coming straight to the Bridge; my kid was being particularly difficult and sometimes, it's easier to get him dealt with and report after," she said. She took a seat. "Science is battle ready, at least," she said, and sipped her coffee. It was the only thing keeping her sane these days, she felt.

Strangely the door on the other side of the observation lounge opened and in walked Hikari, the newly appointed Chief Engineer. She was carrying her tool kit that swung by her side as she walked. "Thats one neat little shortcut!" she smirked. "Did you know if you say deck one instead of 'bridge' it takes you to that rear corridor? Neat huh!" she grinned. "Oh and there's some sealed rooms back there and the head. I really hope someone flushed all those years ago..."

Keeli shook her head lightly. "I didn't know that," she said. "Lieutenant Commander Dr. Keeli Reex, Science."

The doors leading to the bridge slid apart again, and the large Betalgeusian Tac/Sec Chief stepped confidently into the briefing room. When he saw who was in attendance so far, he dipped his head respectfully to the Captain first, then he turned his attention to the other two officers. "Greetings. I am Lieutenant Commander Jo'ohn el'Ataa. I have the Chief of the Tactical and Security departments." As he finished speaking with his talking mouth, his eating beak clicked softly.

Keeli nodded once. "Hello. I am Lt. Commander Dr. Keeli Reex. Science chief," she said.

"I am honored to serve with you, Doctor Reex," Jo'ohn replied respectfully. "What is your doctorate in?"

"Chemistry," she answered quickly. "I've always loved it," she said. "How are you today?" She asked. A Betalgeusian? She hadn't served with one before. This would be a good learning experience.

"I am well, thank you for asking, "Jo'ohn replied with a slight and polite head bow. " It can be difficult."

Keeli chuckled. "Indeed," she said. "Nice to meet you."

Jo'ohn diped his head respectfully again, then his eyes moved over the rest of the assembled officers.

Celeste walked in last of all, but that was a part of her overall plans in any case. While she loathed being anything less than on time or early, but arriving the last of all would possibly give everyone else a bit of ease as she did. She gave a smile as she entered the room and made her way around the table to her seat next to the Captain, the windfox on her shoulder adjusting his balance point as she seated herself, flowing into her lap finally as she settled herself and she glanced at the Captain, "All currently boarded senior officers present and accounted for, Captain.."

"Then let's begin:" Violet nodded. "As y'all are already aware, we're working on a tight timetable to get this ship reactivated. We'll go over the status of everyone's departments in a moment, but before we do, I'd like to go around the table and have y'all introduce yourselves and tell us a bit about yourselves. I'll go ahead and start us off:"

To be continued...
